Descrizione

The house located at Rua Saladino Marinho 489 is a single-family residence constructed during the early decades of the 20th century, likely during a transitional moment between late eclecticism and the early influences of the colonial revival in Jau. Although the original architect remains unidentified, the project exhibits a cultivated architectural language aligned with the hygienic and formal concerns of the time, consistent with residences designed for the growing bourgeoisie of interior cities like Jaú. Occupying a corner lot with a pronounced slope, the building employs a raised ground floor elevated over a semi-basement. This solution—typical of Paulista domestic architecture in the early 1900s—allowed the structure to address both the topographical challenges of the site and the hygienic imperatives of the period by separating living spaces from the dampness of the ground. The semi-basement likely served for storage or service functions and is partially concealed by a robust stone base that anchors the façade visually and structurally. Access is provided through a lateral portico and staircase located on the left side of the main façade. This asymmetrical entrance marks a departure from the strict axiality typical of earlier eclectic models, foreshadowing the increasing popularity of vernacular and colonial forms that would gain prominence in Brazil from the 1920s onward. The façade combines sobriety with a refined attention to detail. The brickwork is exposed and painted, punctuated by arched window openings with ornamental plaster frames and wooden shutters. A central volume slightly projects forward and is crowned with a curved pediment that accentuates its prominence. Decorative elements remain restrained but precise: a floral frieze runs beneath the eaves, and the cornice lines are crisply articulated. The roof, a four-sided hip covered with ceramic tiles, further emphasizes the structure's classical proportions. This residence reflects the aspirations of an emerging middle class that, while not emulating the grand mansions of the coffee barons, still sought to project stability, order, and refinement. The building’s volume, elevation, and stylistic choices mirror a moment in which domestic architecture was both expressive and pragmatic—tailored to climate, culture, and a changing urban fabric. Despite some contemporary alterations, the house at Rua Saladino 489 has preserved the essential features of its original design. Its balance between elevation and terrain, symmetry and asymmetry, ornament and restraint, makes it a valuable example of early 20th-century urban architecture in São Paulo’s interior—marking a quiet but meaningful shift from imported eclecticism toward a more regionally attuned architectural identity.
